Epitalon (AEDG): what the research covers
Epitalon, also spelled Epithalon, is the tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It is described as the putative active component of epithalamin, an extract of bovine pineal gland. Almost all of its research comes from one group: V. Kh. Khavinson and colleagues in St. Petersburg.
Chemistry
- Sequence: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG)
- Molecular formula: C14H22N4O9
- Molecular weight: about 390.3 g/mol
- CAS: 307297-39-8

- Aging markers in mice. Transgenic HER-2/neu mice (Anisimov, Khavinson et al., Bull Exp Biol Med, 2002).
- Oxidative stress. Free-radical and antioxidant enzyme measures in rats (Kozina et al., Bull Exp Biol Med, 2007).
- Short-lived models. Drosophila lifespan studies (Khavinson, Anisimov et al., Mech Ageing Dev, 2000).
Reading the literature carefully
Because the work comes mostly from one research group and appears mostly in one journal, independent replication is limited. That is worth keeping in mind when designing or comparing experiments.
